Exubera Inhaled Insulin is supplied in unit dose blisters containing 1 mg and 3 mg of human insulin. The recommended starting dose is based on this formula:
Body weight (kg) x 0.15 mg/kg = total daily dose in mg
The total daily dose is then divided into three pre-meal doses.
1 mg of Exubera is equivalent to 3 IU of human insulin injected subcutaneously (sc).
3 mg of Exubera is equivalent to 8 IU of human insulin sc.
The dosing is complex and 3 of the 1mg blisters does not equate to a 3 mg dose.
It is important to follow the directions given to you by your doctor to make sure that you are inhaling the correct amount of the Exubera medicine. Make sure you are aware of how to correctly take this medicine. Do not take too much or too little of the Exubera Inhaler Insulin.
The inhaler unit supplied with Exubera includes a base, a chamber, and a release unit. Each release unit may be used for up to 2 weeks before replacing. You may use the inhaler for up to 1 year before replacing it.
Store the Exubera (Insulin Human [rDNA origin]) at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
Do not refrigerate or freeze Exubera (Insulin Human [rDNA origin]).
Protect the Exubera (Insulin Human [rDNA origin]) from moisture and humidity at all times.
Do not store Exubera (Insulin Human [rDNA origin]) in a bathroom.
Once you have opened the foil pouch, keep the unused dose blisters in the pouch and use them within 3 months after opening the pouch. Keep the moisture-absorbing preservative packet contained in the foil pouch and do not open the packet or use its contents.
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of Exubera (Insulin Human [rDNA origin]) and/or if you are experiencing symptoms of an Exubera overdose such as: confusion, drowsiness, weakness, fast heartbeat, sweating, tremor, and nausea.
